Royal Indian Cuisine
7475 Mineral Point Road
At Royal Indian Cuisine, soup isn’t just a main course, it’s also a dessert. The coconut milk soup ($3.99), which also includes almonds and raisins, is served hot, maintaining its sweet flavor.
The creamy dish is one that Royal Indian co-owner and manager Inderjit Kaur said customers have been apprehensive to try in the past but have since become big fans.
“We had customers come in here just the other day saying, ‘We’re only here for the soup,’” Kaur said. “Because of how creamy and sweet it is, they don’t usually finish the whole bowl. But the mulligatawny they finish right away. And that one is our most popular.”
Royal Indian’s mulligatawny ($3.99) is an Indian-style lentil soup, made with cumin-spiced yellow lentils, as well as aromatics like garlic, ginger, onions, cilantro and black pepper. It’s very light and easy to scarf down.
Plus, if the temperature wasn’t enough to warm someone, the combination of cumin, ginger and black pepper might do the trick. Each bowl comes with a lemon to squeeze into the soup, as the citrus does level out some of the spice.
“People come here hungry and we should be taking care of them,” Kaur said. “For anybody who comes here to eat, everything should be perfect.”
